Longtime LSU Chancellor Paul Murrill dies Monday night
Apr 27, 2018Murrill, 83, served as chancellor from 1974 to 1981.He was 39 when he became chancellor after starting at LSU in 1961 as a part-time chemical engineering instructor.F. King Alexander, chancellor and president of LSU, praised Murrill's impact.“Chancellor Murrill showed exceptional strength and leadership during his time at LSU," Alexander said in a statement."His dedication to this university can still be felt on campus today. His legacy will live through his family and through the impact of his service to LSU.”During his time as chancellor, Murrill oversaw the implementation of Title IX for women's athletics, which is aimed at ensuring equal access.He also launched a project called "The Native Flora of Louisiana" with botanical artist Margaret Stones.It was published in 1976 by LSU Press.The project was suggested to Murrill as a way to commemorate the nation's 200th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the LSU campus.Murrill was a native of St. Louis and grew up in Hinds County, Miss.He was a computer specialist and the author and co-author of five textbooks in the computer field.Murrill received his B.S. degree from the University of Mississippi and his M.S. and Ph.D degrees from LSU.He was also a Naval officer and spent three years aboard the USS Valley Forge.After he retired from LSU Murrill served on the boards of 27 publicly-traded corporations regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission.A visitation is set for Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street.Another visitation is set for Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at University Baptist Church, with a memorial service to follow.#inform-video-player-3 .inform-embed { margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 20px; }...
